Queen Anne Contemporary Craftsman Remodel: Part 2

Today we are very excited to unveil Part Two of our Queen Anne Contemporary Craftsman Renovation project sharing our living room, primary suite, and upstairs guest bathroom! As you might remember, my husband and I tore down our existing home built in 1905, and renovated it with a new and improved layout, and increased the size by about 1,000 square feet.

We wanted these spaces to evoke coziness and comfort in a contemporary way that still makes sense in a historic craftsman Seattle home. That meant including traditional touches in the cabinetry and plumbing fixtures in an otherwise modernized space.

Living Room:
The main feature of this room is the Cultured Stone fireplace with custom bookcases on each side. We were looking for a way to showcase special items that we've collected from our travels, and this was the perfect solution. Another favorite feature is the custom window seat with a plush cushion and lush throw pillows. It truly is the perfect place to curl up with a good book with the fire roaring in the background!

For lighting, we selected elegant alabaster sconces by Visual Comfort that cast a warm glow in the corners of the room. I still get excited for nighttime when I get to turn these on!

When deciding on our furniture, I knew I wanted to mix fabrics and textures to create depth and visual interest, so we did so by using a combination of modern leather lounge chairs, and traditional velvet wingback chairs to create a timeless, transitional look. We rounded it out with a large sloped arm sofa, and a stunning Carrara marble coffee table.

Primary Bedroom:
In the primary bedroom, we interspersed wooden beams along the width of the ceiling to add in a rustic feel. We again used Cultured Stone for the corner fireplace to create cohesiveness throughout the home. Behind the bed, we installed a bark-like textured wallpaper to create visual interest next to the neutral wall paint. Luxurious bedding and pillows in neutral tones make this bedroom ultra relaxing.

We fell in love with a gorgeous Hubbardton Forge cascading crystal chandelier, and thought it would make the perfect centerpiece in the room.

The vintage inspired Visual Comfort Sconces on either side of our bed has also been a great touch.

This truly is the window seat of my dreams: comfortable, right next to the fire, and large enough to sprawl out on. The antique brass handles really look striking against the inky black cabinetry.

Primary Bathroom:

In the primary bathroom, the first material we selected was a Kintsugi inspired floor tile which set the tone for the rest of the room. "Kintsugi" which means "to join with gold" is a concept I've loved ever since I first read about it. It originated in Japan, where broken pottery is repaired with a gold lacquered paste. It is interpreted as creating beauty out of imperfection, and also serves as a reminder to stay optimistic when things fall apart.

Once we selected the floor tile, we decided we wanted a warm wood vanity, and a combination of matte black and brass plumbing fixtures. The shower was only supposed to be a normal 7 foot shower, but because of the high ceilings, it didn't feel properly scaled, so we decided to increase it to a 9 foot shower. It is MASSIVE but so luxurious! Because of this, I felt it was important to select very tall mirrors as well, for proper alignment.

Looking up at our beautiful alabaster chandelier while taking a bath is just heavenly. It truly is the focal point of the bathroom, and what everyone comments on first. We had to wait over a year for it to be made, but it was definitely worth the long wait!
Guest Bathroom:
Our guest bathroom incorporates similar elements as the primary bathroom: warm wood cabinetry, a mixture of antique brass and matte black fixtures, and vintage inspired lighting. The crystalline diamond shaped tile in the shower niches is one of my favorite details in this room!

And there you have it- the end of our home tour! I hope you enjoyed reading the backstory on our design choices for our Queen Anne home remodel. Now on to the next project! :)
